VW has been under fire for its cheating diesel vehicles across the globe, facing legal trouble in Germany, South Korea, and by US states. Italy has joined the party with a 5-million-euro ($5.5 million) fine against the German automaker for misleading marketing in that country. VW told Reuters that it plans to challenge the fine and that it has, "fully cooperated with the utmost openness and transparency" with Italy's investigation.

As Roadshow notes, 5 million euros is a paltry 0.037 percent of the $14.7 billion settlement the US reached with VW. The US settlement, though, covered much more than misleading marketing, and some think it wasn't big enough. Given the situation in the rest of the world, the Italian fine is unlikely to be the last.
