Geo was first founded in 1989, and was to be GM’s brand for small, economic, and eco-friendly cars. Though the brand became defunct in 1997, many Geos are still on the road today and in need of service and repairs. As a result, technicians who are Geo dealership certified are more attractive to dealerships and service centers that service Geos and other GM brands. Getting your Geo certification, could mean getting more automotive technician job opportunities so that you can build your career faster.
So how do you get dealership certified for a brand that is no longer in production? Because Geo was a GM brand, Geo certification falls under GM certification, and so you will just need to go through the same education and training program you’d go through to be certified to service GM, Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, and Chevrolet models.
Thus, you can get your Geo dealership technician certification in one of two ways:
Going to an auto mechanic school or other technical institute and completing the GM certification program.
Finding and completing a GM ASEP (Automotive Service Educational Program) course near you.
Both of these programs are designed to help professional technicians get certification for all GM models, including Geo, to make them more valuable and attractive employees for GM dealerships and ACDelco service centers.
Going to an auto mechanic school for Geo dealership certification
To make it easier for students around the country to get their Geo dealership certification (and certifications for other GM brands), GM has partnered with Universal Technical Institute and other auto mechanic schools and technical institutes. At these schools, you can complete a 12-week program in which you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of Geo and other GM brand vehicles and how to service them.
During this program, you will divide your time between classroom lecture-style learning, guided by a certified GM instructor, and hands-on experience working with different GM models. A few of the many areas that you’ll cover in your 12 weeks in this program will include but are not limited to:
- Electrical systems and electronics
- Diesel engine performance
- Steering and suspension
- Engine repair
- Maintenance and inspection
Getting Geo dealership certified with GM ASEP
If you’re interested in getting your Geo dealership certification so that you can work at an ACDelco service center or a GM dealership, then the GM ASEP training program might be the right move for you. GM has partnered with ACDelco and GM dealers all over the country to create a training course that will provide dealers and service centers with the best auto technicians possible.
This course combines core academic coursework that’s relevant to the auto industry and GM vehicles in particular, with hands-on training working with a variety of GM models and brands, including Geo. Because it’s such an intensive program, it’s a great way to get Geo dealership certified and get your car mechanic career off the ground fast.
Also, because the partnership that brought this program together includes ACDelco Professional Service Centers and GM dealerships, it’s relatively easy to find a local ASEP program near you, especially if you’re in a city or town with multiple GM dealerships.
Whichever route you take to become a Geo certified technician, the process of getting this certification will be well worth your time. This education and experience will make it much easier to get the auto technician jobs you want most and to leverage a higher auto mechanic salary, even without much experience.
