If you’re mechanically inclined and you want to put your skills to work for you in an automotive technician job, becoming a Chevrolet dealership certified automotive technician could be the key to success in your new career. GM, and in particular Chevrolet, vehicles are some of the best-selling vehicles in the US today, and dealerships and service centers are consistently looking for qualified technicians who can inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain these vehicles.
Of course, you’ll need to show potential employers – or customers if you work at an independent repair shop – that you are educated in and familiar with Chevrolet brand vehicles. The best way to do this is to obtain your Chevrolet dealership certification, and you can do this through one of three means:
- Complete a GM certification course through a technical institute.
- Complete GM’s ASEP (Automotive Service Educational Program) Course
- Take one or more GM Fleet Technical Training Courses, or the GM Service Technical College (CTS)
The first two of these options will familiarize you with all GM brands, including Chevrolet. The second can be customized to focus on specific models and brands according to your needs.
Chevrolet Certification at a Technical Institute
GM has partnered with technical institutes like Universal Technical Institute to bring students a 12-week program for Chevrolet dealership certification, as well as familiarization with and certification with all other GM brand vehicles.
Over the course of 12 weeks, you’ll experience classroom time, online course time, and supplemental online materials, as well as hands-on training to help you get the most of your new knowledge of Chevrolet brand vehicles. Some of the areas you’ll learn about include but are not limited to:
- Engine repair
- Steering and suspension
- Electrical systems and electronics
- Diesel engine performance
- Maintenance and inspection
If your primary goal is to work for a Chevrolet dealership or an ACDelco service center, the best course of action could be to complete GM’s ASEP course, an intensive program designed to help students get auto mechanic jobs working on GM vehicles. In this program, you’ll combine relevant academic coursework with hands-on training and internship experience. This program is specifically designed to prepare students to be effective automotive technicians for all GM brands, and will help you become a Chevrolet dealership certified technician as quickly as possible.
Because GM ASEP is a joint effort between GM dealerships, GM, and ACDelco Professional Service Centers, it’s not hard to find a program near you, especially if you live in an area with a number of dealerships nearby.
Finally, you may be looking for your Chevrolet dealership certification as a means to become a better automotive technician for your own independent shop or to maintain and repair a fleet of company vehicles. If this is the case, then you may want to consider GM Fleet Technical Training.
GM Fleet classes are conveniently taught on-site, and individual classes are reasonably priced at $215 per student per day. If you’re just looking for specific information about a particular model, like the Chevrolet Impala Police Package, or you want help with a specific system, like HVAC, individual classes make sense. If you’re looking for more generalized information that will help you get a good familiarization with all Chevrolet models, you may want to opt for GM Service Technical College, which will include multiple classes and a more intensive curriculum.
Whichever means you choose, becoming a Chevrolet dealership certified technician can only build your skills and knowledge, and help you progress to get the best auto mechanic jobs as you build your career.
