A couple of months back, we tried to pick the greatest four-cylinder engine of all time, a topic that inspired heated debate. Now we're going to take on the engine type that is more firmly identified with American cars than any other: the V8. Cadillacs have had them going back to 1914, while the first Chevrolet V8 debuted in 1917. This isn't to say that great V8s haven't been made elsewhere in the world, of course; everything from KGB-spec GAZ Volgas to the wild air-cooled Tatra 603 came with this smooth-running, great-sounding, space-efficient engine type. So, what's it going to be? The revolutionary small-block Chevrolet? The mysterious "22CV" V8 installed in prototype Citroën Traction-Avants? Something else?
