Adding a personalized license plate can be a fun way to add a unique touch to your vehicle. You can use a personalized license plate to say something important to you, such as the name of your dog or the initials of your kid.

In the state of Kentucky, many different license plates are available to personalize. So in addition to completely customizing text on the license plate, you can also pick out a plate template that fits you and your interests. Part 1 of 3: Checking the availability of your desired license plate

Step 1: Visit the Kentucky Motor Vehicle Licensing System website. The Kentucky Motor Vehicle Licensing System website can be accessed by visiting

You will need to visit this site if you want to check the availability of your license plate.

  • Tip: If you don’t want to check the availability of your desired license plate, you can skip directly to Part 2.

Step 2: Pick a license plate template. Once you are on the Kentucky Motor Vehicle Licensing System website, you’ll want to click the button that says “Review Plates.”

From there you’ll be given a list of available license plate templates, ranging from the University of Louisville, to the Kentucky Dental Association, to a small mouth bass. Use your mouse to click on the license plate template that you wish to use.

Step 3: Check license plate availability. After selecting a license plate template, click the button at the top of the page that says “Personalize this Plate”. That will take you to a box where you can type in your desired license plate, and see if the plate is available.

If the plate is available, you’re ready to go get it. If the plate is not available, try an alternate plate, until you find one that is available. You can also select the “partial match list” option, to see if there are similar plates available.

  • Tip: If the “Personalize this Plate” button cannot be found, it means that you have chosen a license plate template that cannot be personalized.

Part 2 of 3: Order your personalized Kentucky license plate

Step 1: Head to your local county clerk’s office. Gather your vehicle information, as well as a payment option, and visit your local county clerk’s office.

Tell them you would like to order a personalized license plate, and they’ll give you the necessary forms and paperwork that you need to fill out.

Step 2: Fill out the personalized license plate application. When you receive the application for a personalized Kentucky license plate, be sure to read the questions and instructions carefully.

You will have to fill out some basic information, and also write down the personalized license plate that you would like to order.

When you’ve filled out all the information, sign and date the application.

  • Tip: The personalized license plate application has space for up to four personalized license plate requests. If you did not check the availability of your desired license plate, then you should fill out multiple different license plates, in case your first choice is not available.

Step 3: Pay a personalized license plate fee. When applying for a personalized license plate, you’ll have to pay a $25 fee.

You should be able to pay the fee with either cash, a check, or a credit card, but the county clerk’s office will let you know if they have a desired form of payment.

Part 3 of 3: Install your personalized Kentucky License plate

Step 1: Pick up your license plate from the county clerk’s office. After your application has been processed and approved, your personalized plates will be sent to the county clerk’s office, and they will notify you that the plates are ready to be picked up.

Head over to the county clerk’s office, and collect your exciting new personalized Kentucky license plates.

  • Tip: Don’t be concerned if it takes a while for your personalized license plate to get to the county clerk’s office. This process can take up to six weeks.

Step 2: Install your personalized license plates. After you receive your personalized license plates, you’ll need to remove the old plates, and install the new ones.
