Mechanics are a special breed of human. They goof around, take long lunches on Friday, complain a whole bunch, and of course, fix cars.When you put this many guys in an enclosed building together so many things can happen. When a situation goes wrong with a car repair they are also very adept at laying the blame on someone or something else. Mostly they will lie. I feel like I have heard just about every excuse you can think of. But then I get surprised by a new one.

These posts I am about to introduce will tell some of the crazy stories, excuses, and overall behavioral issues I have witnessed or heard second hand from colleagues. So buckle up and get a taste of the craziness that is the service department world.

This particular situation dealt with the excuse game. "It wasn't me" or my personal favorite "I didn't even touch that part". It is the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object, a tug of war. A car was in for a common recall that dealt with removing the valve cover and checking the valve timing units. The person who owned the car lived about 40 miles away from the dealership (which doesn't seem like much, but in traffic, ugh). The repair was completed, car was washed, pickup occurred and all was good.

But it wasn't. The next day the check engine light came on and the car had to come all the way back to the shop. I was tasked to look at the car and found the air mass sensor was left unplugged. This car, being turbocharged, luckily ran good despite the sensor being left unplugged. Not a big deal, but given the customer time invested in the return visit, an issue for sure. I grabbed the mechanic and showed him the connector being off. The response I got was "I think the turbo over-boosted and blew the sensor connector off." Now, not the dumbest thing I have ever heard, but top 5 for sure. To this day I try to fathom how boost pressure somehow magically made its way into the inlet side of the air intake system. This car must have had magic boost pressure in the air filter. Maybe it was equipped with a second turbo that sends pressure to the main turbo. Either way the situation stuck with me.
