Your car title is what binds you to your vehicle as it proves you are the registered owner. This is a powerful title to hold, and one you will want to keep track of. Unfortunately things can happen and you may find that you have lost the title over time, or perhaps had it stolen. So what can you do? Well obtaining a duplicate title is the best course of action, and you’ll want to do so as soon as you realize it’s missing. This title is of importance if you have plans of transferring ownership of your vehicle, or selling it.
In the state of North Dakota you will be able to obtain a duplicate car title through the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT). You have the option of applying for the title in person or by mail, whichever is most convenient for you.
When applying for your duplicate car title in person you first need to be the registered owner, the owner's personal representative, lien holder, or the power of attorney.
You will need to fill out the Application for Certificate of Title & Registration of a Vehicle (Form SFN 2872), as well as present your registration certificate.
On the application you will need to specify why you need a duplicate - lost, stolen, etc.
There is a fee of $5 for the duplicate title.
You will need to follow all of the above mentioned steps, and then you can mail the information along with the $5 fee to:
Department of Transportation
