As a vehicle owner you have a title that proves the vehicle is yours and you are the registered owner. Over time it's not unheard of for this title to get lost, damaged, or even stolen. This can be rather scary the moment you realize it's gone but fear not as there are some easy steps you can follow in order to obtain a duplicate title.
In the state of Massachusetts the process has been made to be smooth and quick. The goal is to make it easy on you to get what forms and information you need. You will be applying for the duplicate through the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. You can go about it in one of three ways, as we will outline below.
- Should you choose to apply in person, you will first need to fill out the Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title (Form T20558). Once this is done, you can submit it in person at your local Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). Keep in mind the form will ask for your current odometer reading.
If you choose to apply by mail, fill out the same form mentioned above and then mail it to:
Registry of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 55885
Boston, MA 02205
- If you're looking for a quick and easy way to file your application, you can do so online. For this method you will need your current odometer reading, your driver's license number, and your VIN number.
In general after being processed it takes about 10 days to receive your title, no matter which application method you choose. You can find more information about replacing a lost or stolen car title in Massachusetts by visiting the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles site.
