WSOCTV spoke to the woman who did not want to be identified. On Saturday afternoon she saw workers stuff a dead dear into a vehicle she recognized from multiple delivery orders to her home and office. She filmed the event, and then followed the car to China Fun, a Chinese restaurant in Concord, N.C.
"I just couldn't believe what I was seeing," the witness told WSOCTV. "They were backed up to the restaurant door with that dead deer in that car they use for delivery." She immediately called the police, who turned the case over to the Cabarrus County Health Department. What they found was not good.
"We went there and found, indeed, they had slaughtered a deer, or were cutting up a dead deer in the back of the parking lot and had already brought parts inside, into the sink," the County Health Director William Pilkington told WSOCTV. This has, naturally, disturbed regular patrons of China Fun.
Owner Sunny Chen admitted to picking up the deer and butchering it, though he insists that the meat was for himself and not his customers. He told the news station he was simply curious about the taste of venison and wanted to try it himself. Pilkington said that since there was no cross contamination between the roadkill and restaurant food there was no public health threat. China Fun will remain open, though under increased scrutiny from the health department.
