Summer is a great time for a road trip, but often travelers like bringing all the conveniences of home along, in the form of an RV. Then they tow their car behind it – sometimes this practice is called “dinghy towing.” Not every vehicle is appropriate for towing, however. Therefore, if you’re considering buying an RV and you want to know which used cars are best for towing, read on.
Chevrolet Spark: This is the perfect light car for towing behind your RV, at about 2,400 pounds. It’s a great car for day-tripping, too, with outstanding fuel economy (up to 39 mpg highway) and a handy hatchback design that will let you stow all your day-tripping gear easily.
Jeep Wrangler: If your vacation takes you to places other than the open road, you may want a reliable SUV to take you into the backcountry. The Wrangler has long been a stalwart in this regard – in fact it’s practically an icon when it comes to off-roading. It’s powerful, will take you wherever you want to go, and tows easily.
Ford Fusion: The Ford Fusion is a great mid-size sedan, and very well suited for towing behind an RV. It’s also fuel-efficient, and in its hybrid form can get up to 42 mpg combined city/highway gas mileage. It’s also a very safe vehicle for your family, having consistently earned 5-star overall NSTSA safety ratings.
Buick Regal GS: The Regal is a sophisticated vehicle, easy to handle and comfortable for both driver and passengers. It’s also a very attractive, sporty looking vehicle, and in fact, it’s one of very few sports sedans that are capable of being towed behind an RV. If you want to look great and drive in comfort when not in your motor home, this is a great car to bring along.
Toyota Corolla: The Corolla has endured in popularity for 50 years because it’s one of the best family sedans available, and it has always established itself as a highly reliable, fuel-efficient, attractive car. It is also eminently towable. It would be hard to ask for more in terms of a great car to take along behind your motorhome.
Not all cars are towable. The five above all stand out as being among the top vehicles you can take along on your family expeditions.
