Hyundai has been making a real name for itself in the midsize sedan class in the past few years, and the 2012 Hyundai Sonata is no exception. While Hyundai has been around for a while and has been working on building a reputation, the company doesn’t have the same track record for service and repairs that manufacturers like Toyota and Honda have. That can make some consumers nervous about investing in one of their vehicles.
In addition to the two naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engines that Hyundai offers for the Sonata, you can now get the 2012 Hyundai Sonata with a turbo-charged 2.0-liter engine with more horsepower and torque than the other models. Some Sonata models are also available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. Gas mileage for all (non-hybrid) models ranges from 22-24 MPG in the city and 34-35 on the highway.
There have been a few recalls for certain models of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata. These have been due to curtain airbags deploying at inappropriate times, transmission shift cables detaching, connecting rod wear leading to engine stall, and deterioration of the brake pedal stopper.
The most commonly reported problem with the 2012 Hyundai Sonata is engine seizing. This is by far not a universal issue, but it is one to keep in mind when car shopping.
