1967 Hurst Barracuda goes for gold in Jay Leno's Garage

Plymouth didn't exactly go out on a high note. With the notable exception of the Prowler, the division was producing mostly low-rent, rebadged versions of other Chrysler products by the time Auburn Hills shut it down in 2001. But there was a time when it made some (or at least one) of the most desirable muscle cars of its day. And that's the time that Jay Leno is revisiting in this new video installment.

The latest visitor to swing by Jay Leno's Garage is a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda. But not just any Barracuda: this is a custom show car done up by the folks at Hurst that appeared at SEMA a couple of years ago. It's got all manner of goodies inside, out, and under the hood. A reworked 408 small-block engine includes NDX heads and all forged internal components to help it crank out a solid 500 horsepower and just as much torque. (And that's without the nitrous kicking in.)

The suspension and front brakes have been upgraded as well, fitted with solid Centerline wheels. Of course it's got a Hurst gearbox, and it's all done up in Hurst's signature black and gold livery, too. What's more is that the crew from the garage didn't only film it in the muscle car section, but right in front of its contemporary successor in the modern Hurst Challenger, of which Jay just so happens to have one in his collection.
