Land Rover spotted testing upcoming Range Rover Evoque convertible

Jaguar is known for making luxurious convertibles, but if it's an off-roader you want with an opening roof, you'd have to go for the decidedly more spartan Land Rover Defender (and that's not even offered in North America anymore). That's all about to change, though, with the upcoming launch of the Evoque convertible pictured here.

Previewed in concept form three years ago, Land Rover has since confirmed the Evoque convertible for production. But even if you didn't want to take the British automaker at its word, we've got concrete (or at least digital) evidence for you right here.

The Evoque convertible has been spotted undergoing testing both on the still-snowy roads of Sweden and around the Nürburgring. Judging from the wheels (which admittedly could have been swapped for snow tires), the black lower body cladding and the placement of the stickers on the windshield, these appear to be two different prototypes, but of the same vehicle.

It's based on the littlest (and arguably most stylish) Range Rover we already know, but with a folding canvas roof to put it in contention to take over from the oddball Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet that just recently ceased to exist – however small that market may have been in the first place.
