The only thing that we know officially is was what he said, which was this: "Tesla press conf at 9am on Thurs. About to end range anxiety ... via OTA software update. Affects entire Model S fleet." Khobi Brooklyn, Tesla's director of global communications, further told AutoblogGreen that, Elon will make the announcement Thursday and, "We'll have more details to share tomorrow."
So, that's the official word. Just because we don't know more doesn't mean we can't speculate some. Given the claim that this change is going to be delivered via an over-the-air update, we'll dismiss any thought that Tesla will make Model S battery swapping a feasible alternative or that it will some day add a range extender. Two likely candidates are that the new software will allow the battery pack to access more of its inherent capacity or that it will somehow make Supercharging even faster. If you have any other ideas, please share them in the Comments. To be honest, we hope Jalopnik's guess that this all involves, "magic crystals and unicorn tears" is right on the mark.
