Boston drunk driver launches truck off expressway

A man in Boston admitted to drinking prior to the crash that launched his pickup truck off the upper deck of Interstate 93 and down to the lanes below Sunday morning.

Vannak Sao had just left a friend's house after a night of drinking. Sao told CBS Boston a combination of alcohol and exhaustion from starting a new night job caused him to fall asleep at the wheel. His truck nearly hit another car before plowing through a chain link fence and hitting an icy barrier. The barrier, instead of stopping the truck, acted as a ramp, propelling Sao's car into the air and eventually 50 to 60 feet down to the interstate below. Sao said he was woken up by rescue crews and didn't realize the extent of the crash until he saw the footage later in the hospital.

Sao told CBS Boston his actions were reckless and he was thankful no one else was hurt. He faces charges for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
