GM says it's trying to reach more owners using social media and has expanded a call center used to handle customer questions, The New York Times reported. But many owners are still languishing on long waiting lists for replacement parts.
The long wait time is putting drivers at risk. Another driver may have died as a result of the faulty ignition switch in a crash on October 9. Accident victim Brittany Alfarone tried to get her 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt fixed twice, but each time was turned away by dealers, the newspaper reported. A few weeks prior to the accident, the car's airbags and power steering shut off while going over a bump. Police are investigating the crash that took Alfarone's life, but are worried the black box was too damaged to retrieve data.
Without a full investigation, her family not be able to submit a wrongful death claim to GM's voluntary compensation fund by the company's self-imposed December 31 deadline. So far, the chairperson of the fund, Kenneth Feinberg, has approved 30 of 193 death claims and 31 of 184 injury claims, according to The Detroit News.
