The
US Navy christened and launched its newest
littoral combat ship, the
Freedom-class, future
USS Detroit. The
Detroit won't officially wear the "USS" designation until its commissioning on the Detroit River in 2016.
The 3,500-ton LCS was launched from the shipyards at Marinette Marine Corporation in Marinette, WI on Saturday. The dramatic launch is actually fairly common among the Navy's vessels, and has been used for the other Freedom-class ships built at MMC.
Take a look at the Navy news report, a time lapse of the Detroit being moved into position and the actual launch itself.
