We knew the all-electric Audi R8 E-Tron will never go into widespread production, but reports of its total demise were apparently premature. Last October, word was that the R8 E-Tron project was being put on hold, pending an internal review by Audi's new research and development head, ahead of a launch we thought might be coming in early 2013. It was an appealing vehicle, with dashing looks and a range in the 150-mile zone. It was estimated to take less than five seconds to go from 0-60 miles per hour.

New reports, though, suggest that limited production of the R8 E-Tron might still be possible. Mark Dahncke, product and motorsports communications manager for Audi of America, told AutoblogGreen that, "The R8 E-Tron project may still be continued in a very small volume of cars that has yet to be decided. What has been decided is that it will not be executed on a large scale production basis." Looks like all-electric luxury like the Tesla Model S and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive will have one less competitor to worry about.
