Car2go cuts long-term reservations; Miami service proves popular

Car2go seems to have discovered the equivalent of a seller's market.

The Daimler-owned car-sharing service, in an e-mail to customers, said it'll stop long-term reservation availability for its cars starting November 12. Given that the average trip in a vehicle is less than a half-hour and most reservations are made pretty close to rental time, car2go is reasoning that it's better to keep more of its cars available by making sure none of them stay out for too long.

The company made the policy change as it disclosed that Car2go Miami attracted more than 6,000 members within its first 100 days of operations, with users making more than 35,000 trips.

Car2go debuted its Miami service in late June with 240 Smart ForTwo minivehicles. Rental rates were set at 38 cents a minute and $13.99 an hour. The company raised prices at the rest of its US operations to those rates in September.

- New carsharing program celebrates milestone with VIP event and photo exhibition at LMNT

MIAMI, Nov. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- car2go, the carsharing program that launched in Miami this July, is approaching its 100-day mark in the city and is announcing impressive membership numbers tied to the milestone date. More than 6,000 Miami members have signed up since its inception, and collectively the members have taken more than 35,000 trips in the 240 car2gos in Miami, a real sign that the blue and white smart cars have left a big impression on locals.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, convenience, and ease, car2go's success in Miami testifies to a greater issue on alternative transportation, and locals seem eager to embrace new methods of getting around the congested city.

Nicholas Cole, president and CEO of car2go North America said of the success, "car2go provides Miami with a carsharing service that is unmatched in convenience, flexibility and fun. Our on-demand model of carsharing takes transportation to an entirely new level of accessibility; the people of Miami have realized that and have integrated car2go into their daily lives."

In honor of the 100-day mark in Miami, car2go will be hosting an event with a special photo exhibition on Saturday, November 10, at LMNT in Wynwood. The exhibition will feature a visual presentation by two devoted car2go members – lifestyle photographer Carlos Ramos and film director Giancarlo Loffredo, depicting a day in the life of car2go in Miami.
