Porsche unveils more powerful Cayenne S Diesel

View 7 Photos
We recently drove the new 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel – the automaker's first oil-burning offering here in the States. But here in Paris, Porsche has pulled the wraps off of a more powerful version of the diesel Cayenne, and on paper, it sure looks sweet.

The meat and potatoes of the Cayenne S Diesel package is a twin-turbocharged 4.2-liter diesel V8 that produces 382 horsepower and 627(!) pound-feet of torque. Having that much grunt on tap means the all-wheel-drive Cayenne will shoot to 62 miles per hour in a scant 5.7 seconds, topping out at 157 mph. Even more remarkably, when you aren't driving with a lead foot, the S Diesel will return around 28 miles per gallon. Impressive stuff.

Porsche officials have told Autoblog that we won't be getting the Cayenne S Diesel here in the United States, meaning we'll have to make due with the 240-hp 3.0-liter oil-burner. Not that that's a bad thing. Scroll down for the official release.

Strongest diesel Porsche ever: Cayenne S Diesel with biturbo V8

Porsche is launching the most powerful diesel model in its history in the form of the Cayenne S Diesel. The 4.2-litre eight cylinder engine with biturbo charging outputs 382 hp (281 kW) and offers a maximum torque of 850 Newton metres. This lets the new Cayenne S Diesel attain top values in both dynamic performance and efficiency: The new top diesel completes the sprint from a stop to 100 km in 5.7 seconds, and its top speed is 252 km/h. In the process, it utilises its energy in an exemplary way: Its NEDC fuel consumption is just 8.3 litres per 100 km (CO2: 218 g/km). One factor contributing to this excellent value is the auto start/stop function; the new model is the world's only SUV with a diesel V8 to offer this functionality.

The Cayenne S Diesel offers a driving experience that is typical of a Porsche and yet is altogether new. It is emotional like a sports car in its dynamic performance and engine sound. The smooth running properties and sound of the eight-cylinder engine reach a level that matches the properties of previous Porsche V8 engines. The Cayenne S Diesel gets its very special character from the PTM active all-wheel drive system. The direct rear-axle drive gives it the driving qualities of a rear-wheel drive vehicle - together with all of the benefits related to handling and precision. The new car also assumes the role of a long-distance champion: based on its NEDC fuel consumption the Cayenne S Diesel - equipped with an optional 100-litre fuel tank - can be driven a distance of about 1,200 km without having to stop to refuel.
