Sports carmaker's second vehicle in the MP4-12C lineup offers same tech, without the top

Earlier this summer McLaren took the wraps off its MP4-12C Spider, set to join the coupe variant as the second vehicle in the 12C lineup. As to be expected from the storied British brand, the 12C Spider serves some serious specs. A 3.8-liter V8 twin turbo engine makes a monstrous 616 horsepower, propelling the hardtop convertible from 0-62 miles per hour in only 3.1 seconds. Of course, that power comes at a cost--namely, the $265,750 price tag.

What interests us most about McLaren is their philosophy of building sports cars based on performance technologies first introduced in Formula 1 racing, where the company got its start. Perhaps no vehicle better embodied that theme than the automaker's first road car, the aptly named McLaren F1.

That spirit of tech-transfer lives on in cars like the 12C and 12C Spider, as McLaren Automotive's Richard Powell explains in the video below.

McLaren is taking orders now on the 12C Spider, but deliveries aren't planned until next year. Thankfull, we don't have to wait that long to see (and hear) it in action:
