World Report 12/9: Smart For-Us EV Pickup And More

Welcome to TRANSLOGIC World Report: Your weekly roundup of transportation tech news from around the web.

How smart is a pickup with 3 ft of cargo area? German-based microcar manufacturer Smart ventures to find out at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The electric drive Smart For-Us is an admittedly "tongue-in-cheek" concept that offers a miniaturized take on the 2-door pickup bodystyle. [AUTOBLOG GREEN]

Things continue to heat up for General Motors as a result of an NHTSA crash test of a Chevy Volt that led to a fire while the car was held in storage some 3 weeks later. The fire occurred in June, but was not publicly disclosed until November. Not only is GM looking at redesigning the battery pack for increased safety, they're offering loaners and are reportedly even willing to buy back Volts from concerned customers. What's more, a U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee will apparently look into the omission of "important safety information" in NHTSA testimony following the crash. [AUTOBLOG]
