In early March, we reported that General Motors was toying with the idea of expanding its plug-in hybrid vehicle lineup. At the time, the Cadillac SRX crossover was rumored to be a candidate for plug-in technology. During an interview with AutoblogGreen, Jon Stec, fuel system integration engineer for the Chevrolet Volt, told us the following:
However, a GM spokesman on the call clarified that a SRX PHEV program did not exist and has never officially existedWe've got another plug-in coming, which is the 166, the SRX, which is the same basic technology.
Now, it seems The General may have pulled the plug on the PHEV SRX. According to Reuters, GM has canceled plans to develop a plug-in hybrid based on the Cadillac SRX crossover, deciding that the project was not financially viable. Reuters cites three unidentified people with "direct knowledge" of the project, two of which confirmed that plans for a plug-in SRX could be revived when Cadillac's aging crossover gets an overhaul. For now, it looks like the plug-in SRX will rest in peace.
