We've been toying with the idea of building a home-brew EV for well over a year. We've got a range of starting points, from the humble Volkswagen Beetle to something with a bit more panache (a friend has a Bonneville convertible rotting in his yard just begging to be built up). But few candidates are as desirable as a Porsche 356 Speedster.

Cali-based Euromasters apparently agrees and is building Speedster replicas packing 120-horsepower motors that deliver a 0-60 mph time of 5.6 seconds (up considerably from a stock 356's time), a top speed of over 100 mph and a claimed range of over 200 miles. Pricing comes in at a cool $49,900 for the Speedster and $54,900 for a 550 Spyder replica, each packing the same mechanicals. But considering an original Speedster commands well over $100k, both are screaming deals.
