Volkswagen's deliciously adorable three-door Up! minicar is scheduled to hit the stage, in its production form, at the Frankfurt Motor Show next September. Deliveries of the not-for-U.S. gasoline and diesel Up! models are pegged to get underway in late 2011. Automotive News (sub. req.) now reports that the first variant to be offered, a four-seat, three-door model with a couple of three-cylinder gasoline and diesel engine options ranging in size from 0.6 to 1.2 liters, will hit the market at a base price of around 10,000 euros ($14,044 U.S. at the current exchange rate).
Volkswagen's development chief, Ulrich Hackenberg, told Automotive News' sister publication Automobilwoche that the Up! is right on schedule, stating:
Following the launch of the three-door Up!, VW will roll out a five-door version and introduce an optional dual-clutch gearbox, which will join the standard manual trans offered from the get go. In 2013, the battery-powered E-Up!, which is expected to come stateside, will round out the minicar lineup. The final prototype phase is currently taking place for the Up, so we will be able to start building near-production cars soon.
