RE Hydrogen Ltd (REH) was awarded £25,000 ($39,285 U.S. at the current exchange rate) from the UK's Technology Strategy Board to scale up their prototype electrolyzers, which can produce hydrogen gas for use in the transportation industry. REH claims that its electrolyzser is one of the most efficient available and, perhaps more importantly, it's also said to be up to 93 percent cheaper than other electrolyzers on the market today. REH will use its award money to build a prototype 5 kW stack that is projected to produce 2.3 kilograms of hydrogen per day. For now, REH will focus its efforts on advancing electrolyzer technology, but the company is also open to the idea of producing low-cost fuel cells for automakers if the business opportunity presents itself. RE Hydrogen Ltd has developed an extremely low cost and highly efficient electrolyser prototype. The material cost of these electrolysers is 93% cheaper and 13% more efficient than other electrolysers on the market. RE Hydrogen has won £25,000 from the Technology Strategy Board, UK to scale up their prototype to build a 5kW stack at £75/kW. These 5kW electrolysers will produce 2.3kg hydrogen per day, which will be adequate for a fuel cell car. REH's electrolysers can potentially be a disruptive technology in the present hydrogen production and supply industry due to its low cost. REH adopts a novel approach to reduce the number of parts in the stack of the electrolyser. REH has also developed a new method of sealing the stack. It has demonstrated a novel manufacturing method for low cost production, even for small volume manufacturing. The overall stack cost is £75/kW for a small batch production of 10kW, which is unmatched by other electrolyser manufacturers. Volume production will improve this even further. Although this unique manufacturing method is also applicable and of potentially high value in the production of to fuel cells, REH will only focus at this stage on electrolyser technology because there is already more than sufficient opportunity within the existing hydrogen market. RE Hydrogen will develop extremely low cost fuel cells in the future too to provide a complete solution to their customers from system design, energy storage and generating power.
RE hydrogen will sell these electrolysers for the billion dollar global market in the low carbon transport fuel and energy sector. RE Hydrogen will initially focus on replacing costly hydrogen gas bottles. The markets for RE Hydrogen's electrolysers are:
i) Renewable energy storage and smart grid.
ii) Production of green hydrogen and synthetic diesel.
iii) Hydrogen for low emission vehicles and fuel cells.
iv) Replacing costly hydrogen bottles and reformers.
v) using by-product oxygen for water & waste treatment.RE Hydrogen will produce 50-250W, 1-5kW, 25kW and 100kW electrolysers. RE Hydrogen has already secured customers.
RE hydrogen is currently discussing with number of large customers for their electrolysers. RE Hydrogen collaborates with wind turbine manufacturers and solar PV system installers to produce green hydrogen onsite for customers to capture the market share from large gas supply companies. As an example one 1.5kW wind turbine produces 2000kWh electricity per year, which is worth of £670/year including the "Feed in Tariff". But if this electricity is converted into hydrogen using RE Hydrogen's electrolysers it will produce 35 hydrogen gas bottles, which will be valued from £1250 up to £3850. Therefore RE Hydrogen's electrolysers can reduce the payback period of wind turbines significantly. This business model is also applicable for solar PV systems. REH electrolysers will thus enable and underpin the growth of renewable energy for the production of green transport fuel and energy sector.
RE Hydrogen is also discussing with customers for MWh scale grid energy storage to provide back up to the electrical sub-station. RE Hydrogen team members have significant experience in designing, installing and operating 8000 kWh hydrogen energy storage project in Loughborough (2002-2010). RE Hydrogen is also discussing with small scale energy storage project for remote areas.
