BP CEO Tony Hayward isn't exactly the most popular businessman in the world these days. Socially tone-deaf, he's going to be remembered (rightly) for his callous "I want my life back" statement that came while his company's oil was ruining the lives of people living along the Gulf of Mexico. He has announced he will leave BP and, in two weeks, will be gone.
Not everyone wants him to just disappear without a chance to redeem himself. After all, Hayward was the head of the company that tries to get us to say "beyond petroleum," right? So it kind of makes sense that he should be driving an electric car.

That's what the people behind Hello Electric think, and they are collecting digital signatures to put him behind the wheel of a Nissan Leaf. Here's the text they're asking people to support :
You've seen first-hand the devastation caused by our global oil addiction. Now you've got more free time on your hands, we're offering you the chance to truly move "beyond petroleum" by driving an electric car and encouraging the world to do the same.

To make it easy for you, we've picked out an awesome new electric car and paid the deposit. Once 25,000 people have signed this goodbye card, we're offering the car to you personally. Just think, you'll never have to make another trip to the gas station!
There is at least one string attached. In order to actually get the Leaf, Hayward would have to agree, "to act as an ambassador for electric cars." Oh, and Hello Electric is aware that Hayward has got lots of cash and doesn't need a free car. They write:
Even without his CEO job, Tony is a wealthy man, so although we chose a car we thought he'd like – and even picked a color – we'd of course be even happier for him to buy his own.
