President Barack Obama dropped into Holland, MI on Thursday to pay a visit to the site where LG Chem is building a factory to produce lithium ion cells for electric and hybrid vehicles. While he was there, he had a chance to check out two of the cars that will eventually be powered by the cells produced in Holland.
We've known for a year and a half that General Motors would use LG Chem cells in the Chevrolet Volt. Earlier this week we heard from Ford that it would also use LG Chem cells for the Focus Electric that will debut next year. Both a Volt and Focus prototype were on hand at the plant. We're pretty sure that Obama didn't have a chance to drive either of the cars, but both are benefiting significantly from the 2009 stimulus act that he pushed through Congress. LG Chem received over $151 million toward the cost of the facility.
