With the U.S. launch date of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV still more than a year away, the company hopes to glean some additional insight from real-world use of the little electric vehicle (EV). In order to conduct real-world tests of the i-MiEV, Mitsubishi has announced plans to send a pair of them to the State of California for long-term evaluation. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the California Department of General Services hope to include many electric vehicles in the state's fleet for evaluation purposes and the i-MiEVs will be the first to join the party.
Mitsubishi told Gov. Schwarzenegger that electric vehicles are just the type of thing that California needs to help the state overcome pollution problems and drive it towards a sustainable transportation future (isn't that what the Hydrogen Highway aims to do?). The evaluation of the i-MiEV will help the state develop an EV infrastructure, which will go a long way towards convincing buyers that going electric is doable. Wonder if Nissan will throw a pair of Leafs in for evaluation too?
