We've seen our fair share of home-built electric cars and trucks, but very few of them have ever struck us as being as intriguing as the so-called Balanced-Over-Batteries car from Robert Lange. The retired auto mechanic from California built the electric car over the course of three years and claims to have spent just $500 in the process – considering the thought that must have gone into the machine, both those figures are impressive as far as we're concerned. Recycled components were used throughout, including the tail rotor gearbox assembly from a helicopter.
We're not sure what kind of batteries are used (from the price, we'd guess reclaimed lead acid units), but they are slung underneath the single-occupant cockpit and act as a counterweight as the passenger compartment leans into turns. That tilting action – up to 45-degrees – is also what steers the vehicle. The batteries can be switched from 36 to 72 volts (possibly by means of a parallel or serial arrangement?), which serves as a two-speed "gearbox" of sorts. Check it out in the gallery below.
