Stop & Start technology, also known as mild hybrization, is a relatively simple technology that can easily reduce fuel consumption in vehicles. Regular readers already know how it works. Basically, in most instances, the engine shuts down instead of idling, for instance at traffic lights, and stores enough energy to start right back up when the driver presses the gas pedal or shifts into the first gear. This technology can now be found in most car types, and is especially popular in Europe. It will surely become even more widespread once new CO2 legislation is enforced across Europe. We've got a list of 19 models (most of them available now, the rest coming soon) that offer Stop and Start on the continent.

  • BMW 1-Series: Introduced in 2007, it includes an indicator to change gears to maximize fuel efficiency.
  • BMW 3-Series: The 1-series' smaller sibling; all 4-cylinder models have Stop & Start factory-installed.
  • Citroën C2 and C3 series: The pioneer in Europe in offering Stop & Start technology since April 2006, where the alternator and the starter are together in a single unit.
  • Fiat 500 pur O2: A car with plenty of things to love, like its 115 g/km of CO2, or the 4.9 l/100 km fuel consumption from its 1.2-liter gasoline engine. Oh, via EcoDrive, it can also store fuel consumption figures to teach you how to drive more efficiently using any memory stick.
  • Hyundai i10 blue: This model not only has Stop & Start technology but it also includes the usual fuel efficiency tweaks (low-rolling resistance tires, 6-speed transmission...) to produce just 95 g/km of CO2.
  • Hyundai i30 blue: Announced for the Geneva Motor Show, the car will match the Stop&Start to an auto transmission yet keep emissions at 142 g/km of CO2 from the 1.4-liter engine.
  • Kia Cee'd ISG: A corporate twin of the previous model.
  • Land Rover Freelander TD4_e: What, an SUV here? This one keeps fuel consumption at 6.7l/100 and CO2 emissions under 180 g/km (video here).
  • Mazda 3 2.0 DISI: Claimed by Mazda to be the "fastest responding" model at traffic lights.
  • Mercedes A Class: All Bluefficiency models include the Stop & Start feature which helps lower fuel consuption by 0.4 l/100km.
  • Mini: As with its BMW relatives, the MINI's Stop & Start technology stops the engine at Neutral position and engages it back when first gear is engaged.
  • Porsche Panamera: Porsche's first sedan includes a dual-clutch gearbox and micro hybrid technology to make the V8 as frugal as possible.
  • Smart Fortwo mhd: mhd stands for MicroHybrid Drive and when installed on the trendy 2-seater, it produces just 103 g/km of CO2.
  • Toyota iQ Optimal Drive: Fitted to the 1.33-liter gasoline engine, the Optimal Drive line of Toyotas falls into the brand of fuel efficient offerings. This model will be ready next July.
  • Toyota Yaris Optimal Drive: The same configuration as its smaller sibling; good for just 120 g/km of CO2.
  • Toyota Auris Optimal Drive: Once again the same configuration as its two smaller siblings but in a package that offers 103 hp.
  • Toyota Urban Cruiser: Whether in the 1.33-liter gas engine or the 1.4-liter diesel models, both will have Stop&Start technology installed at the factory.
  • Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion: A comfortable sedan producing just 128 g/km of CO2.
  • Volkswagen Passat BlueTDI: 2.0-liter version and Euro VI-ready
