The most common electric cars in America, GEM NEVs, will serve as shuttle vehicles for VIPs during tonight's "Green Inaugural Ball." The ball is part of this weekend's celebrations of Barack Obama's upcoming swearing in as the 44th president of the United States. Six-seat e6 GEM vehicles, courtesy of e-Cruzers, will be used to move people around while a smaller e4 (guess how many people fit inside) will be on display inside the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, where the ball is taking place. The e4 comes from the Pohanka Chrysler Dodge dealer. If you're not a GEM-worthy VIP, event organizers reminds attendees that, the auditorium "is conveniently located half a block away from a Metro Station, Event Emissary is urging Ball attendees to take advantage of the city's public transportation on celebration night." I suppose if John McCain (remember him?) wants to ride in a battery-powered car this weekend, he can do so in one of his three GEMs.

GEM Selected to Provide Emission-Free Shuttles for VIPs
Washington, DC – January 16, 2009 – Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) is proud to have been selected by the hosts of the prestigious event, Environment America, One Degree Less, and Event Emissary, to provide GEM 100% battery-electric eco-friendly cars to transport VIPs and celebrities to and from the highly-anticipated "Green Inaugural Ball." This 100% organic celebration is set to take place on January 17th from 8 p.m. – 12 midnight at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium. From the hors d'ourves to the flower arrangements, every aspect of the Ball was designed to be "green."
The Green Inaugural Ball highlights grass roots individuals and organizations that are devoted to improving the environment, so GEM cars, which are legal on streets over 35mph or below, were a natural for transportation. GEM e6 models that hold 6 passengers will be used to shuttle guests to and from the Ball and a 4-passenger GEM e4 model will also be prominently displayed inside the Ball. The GEM e6 "shuttles" and drivers is being provided by e-Cruzers.com, and the e4 GEM on display is being provided by Pohanka Chrysler Dodge of Leesburg.
"We are proud to showcase GEM electric cars at the Green Inaugural Ball celebrating Obama's inauguration," says Event Emissary Co-Founder Stephanie Campbell. "Using the GEM cars to transport many of the Green Inaugural Ball's VIPs demonstrates how even big, high-profile events can be 'green' and classy at the same time."
As the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium is conveniently located half a block away from a Metro Station, Event Emissary is urging Ball attendees to take advantage of the city's public transportation on celebration night.
The Green Inaugural Ball also makes sure that its green message transcends beyond transportation – from its environmentally conscious décor to paperless ticket sales, the Ball focuses on "going green" in all aspects of the event. This includes serving local and organic food and beverages, composting food waste and floral arrangements, and using an energy-efficient lighting scheme. Ball organizers also plan to pay for wind power offsets and carbon credits to ensure the event is carbon neutral.
Driving the equivalent of 150 miles per gallon at 25 miles per hour, GEM electric vehicles are much more economical in price and fuel consumption. GEM vehicles also produce zero tailpipe emissions, leaving almost no carbon footprint. To date, GEM cars have been driven over 300 million emission-free miles, and have saved over 15 million gallons of gas. They have also prevented over 180 tons of ozone-producing pollutants from reaching the air.
The Green Inaugural Ball is sure to be a GEM of an event, celebrating the nations' new eco-focused administration.
