New TFSI engine: More dynamic and better fuel economy

Wolfsburg, April 16, 2007 – Volkswagen is setting off high-tech fireworks at Auto Shanghai 2007 (April 20 to 28). New cars like the Polo BlueMotion and the Passat that is debuting in China as the Magotan, as well as new powertrain technologies should make a powerful contribution in the land of moderation toward setting benchmarks when it comes to environmental protection. The Volkswagen Group has targeted a 20 percent reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of the cars it offers by the year 2010. Volkswagen Chairman Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg will explain the brand's strong environmental commitment in the context of a press conference* at Auto Shanghai 2007.

Magotan: The sedan is a globally successful model under the name Passat. The Magotan defines state-of-the-art technology in China with its economical and low-emission engines. Right from the start, when the model concept was developed in Germany, the intention was to have this Volkswagen fulfill all requirements of the Chinese market and be relevant to the tastes of contemporary Chinese society. The Magotan is being introduced this spring.

Polo BlueMotion: The 59 kW / 80 PS strong Polo BlueMotion commends itself for introduction in China as the most economical five-seater in the world par excellence with an average consumption of 3.9 liters per 100 kilometers and CO2 emissions of just 102 g/km. However, a prerequisite for its performance is a significant improvement in the quality of diesel fuel offered there.

Touran EcoFuel: Another highlight in the area of environmentally-friendly technologies is the Touran EcoFuel (80 kW / 109 PS) that is also being presented in China for the first time. The use of natural gas as fuel reduces practically all harmful exhaust components. Besides 20 percent lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, about 80 percent less carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NOX) is produced, and emissions of methane-containing hydrocarbons (HC) are about 70 percent lower.

1.8 TFSI: Volkswagen is also relying on high-tech in China in the area of gasoline engines. The best example: The new 1.8 TFSI with 118 kW / 160 PS. Technically speaking, the four cylinders of the latest generation of Page 1 of 2 No. 109/2007 EA888 engines are characterized by gasoline direct-injection plus turbocharging. Thanks to intelligent downsizing, the engine is as dynamic as it is economical. The 1.8 TFSI is built for Asia in the new Chinese plant at Dalian, which is also pioneering in the area of environmental protection.
