Joh
n Berning used to write songs about the high price of gas. Now he's finding personal solutions to the rising cost of transportation.

A hospital technician in Eureka, California, Berning installed a small gas motor on his bicycle. Working with a $600 kit sold by Montana-based Dimension Edge, Berning says the 2-cycle Mitsubishi engine meets California emissions standards.

Berning considers the bike a hybrid, using the motor when a faster pace is needed, such as getting to work. He then pedals home for exercise. Following a controlled test he calculated the bike gets 160mpg. Cruising speed is about 21mph.
