The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that 805,368 1999-2000 model year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks are being recalled for faulty tailgate cables that can deteriorate via corrosion... a potentially dangerous condition when supporting heavy loads. About 90,000 additional units are being recalled in Canada and Mexico, bringing the total to almost 900,000.

In December of 2004, GM recalled the 2000-2004 models for the same problem.
