Army taps Quantum for hydrogen-powered Ford Escape

The United States' Army's National Automotive Center has awarded Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide with the task of building a hydrogen-powered Ford Escape Hybrid for its use. The award isn't the first time that Quantum has been blessed with a government contract -- the Department of Defense currently has Quantum's mobile hydrogen filling stations worked into the 2006 budget.

For the Ford Escape project, Quantum will look at various types of drivetrain configurations, including bi-fuel (hydrogen or gasoline) as well as strictly hydrogen configurations. The company will be responsible for developing the advanced hydrogen storage system, fuel injection system, and electronic controls.
