Ford factory driver Marcus Gronholm (above) held off a hard-charging Sebastien Loeb (Citroen) to win his first Monte Carlo Rally Sunday.

Victory was thought to be out of reach for Loeb after he crashed out of the last stage Friday and received a 5 minute penalty, but Loeb charged back to win five stages on Saturday (and ten stages overall), ultimately finishing second, 1 min 1 sec behind Gronholm's faltering Focus. Toni Gardemeister (Peugeot) finished third, 21 sec behind Loeb.

Loeb had hoped to equal the all-time record of four consecutive Monte Carlo victories.

For those of us without access to TV coverage, the official World Rally Championship website is the place to go, with video clips of key stages, including car onboards. Well worth the visit.
