With only tomorrow's 31 km special stage remaining, the Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart team of Luc Alphand and Gilles Picard seem to be destined for victory, with a 17 min 53 sec lead over the second place Volkswagen Touareg of Giniel de Villiers and Tina Thorner. Despite losing time due to a navigational error, the Mitsubishi team of Nani Roma and Henri Magne remain solidly in the final podium position. More after the jump...
Dakar VW all-night service, Stage 12 bivouac.
The stage marked a one-two finish for the BMW X3s driven by Guerlain Chicherit and Alfie Cox. Chicherit finished the day in 9th overall, 8 hours and 25 minutes off the lead.
Saturday was a good day for American Mark Miller, who was third on the stage, and now lies only 3 min and 1 sec behind fourth place Stephane Peterhansel. This quote from Miller gives you an idea of what makes the Dakar such a unique challenge: "There was a Pro-Truck on its side at the 30 kilometre mark. [Blocking the road] Its driver was already waiting with a tow rope. To pull it onto its wheels again took us a minute."
