Now that the Dakar has moved out of Mauritania's dunes and into faster terrain, the Volkswagen team is charging back into contention, with team drivers de Villiers and Saby posting a one-two stage finish today. (De Villiers is shown above in Stage 10.)
De Villiers remains in third place overall, but has reduced his gap to the leading Mitsubishi Pajero of Stephane Peterhansel by 21 minutes, to 42 minutes. De Villiers is only 17 min 10 sec behind the second place Mitsubishi of Luc Alphand.
Today's stage marked the fifth stage victory for Volkswagen in this year's Dakar.
American Mark Miller moved his VW Touareg into fifth place, following the retirement of teammate Jutta Kleinschmidt after damaging her car's suspension in an accident.
