Last Friday Zipcar, the beloved little company that rents out vehicles for use in densely populated urban areas, offered free shuttle service around the isle of Manhattan to New Yorkers put out by a possible transit strike. Ford Escapes, Honda Elements, Toyota Siennas and other vehicles used by the service were driven by Zipcar employees who picked up and dropped off pedestrians at various H&H Bagels around the city including the Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Grand Central Station and Penn Station.
The normal Zipcar service is as easy to use as an ATM, with customers making reservations in minutes or up to a year in advance, picking up their vehicle at one the company's various city-wide locations and using a Zipcard to unlock the door and drive away. Many of our colleagues in the Weblogs, Inc. network who live in New York rave about the service, and we imagine many more New Yorkers will warm up to the company after getting home from work thanks to a free ride.
