Saab today announced the recall of about 300,000 9-3 and 9-5 cars from the 2000 through 2002 model years.
Saab will replace the ignition box in the affected cars, on the request of the U.S. NHTSA. Apparently an electrical overload causes the box to fail and the engine will not start. In a few cases, ignition box failures have killed the engine while the car was moving. Fortunately, no injuries have resulted.

Owners will be contacted in the near future, and repairs will begin in early 2006.
