Mitsubishi Fuso, the Japanese truckmaker 85 percent owned by DaimlerChrysler, announced nine new recalls Monday, bringing to 98 the total recalls issued in the last 18 months. A total of 890,000 vehicles have been recalled since March 2005 - 68 percent of Mitsubishi trucks and buses in the Japanese market. Many vehicles were recalled more than once.
Mitsubishi Fuso has been digging itself out of a defect cover-up scandal dating back to 2000, when the company admitted that it had systematically hidden defects for more than 20 years to avoid recalls. Two traffic deaths have been blamed on defective Misubishi Fuso trucks.
