A California law firm has petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to investigate what it says is a costly and dangerous engine defect.
The petition reports that spark plugs can blow out of engines because of cylinder head flaws. The engines in question are 4.6- and 5.4-liter V8s and the Triton V10, found in 1997-2004 E-series vans, F-series pickups, SUVs, Mustangs and Crown Victorias. As many as 17 million vehicles could be affected.
The petition claims that spark plugs have shot out of Ford engines "thousands of times" and requests that Ford be fined $15 million.
