Chrysler may add 3rd shift to Belvidere, Ill. plant

Chrysler CEO and chairman Tom LaSorda announced that Chrysler may add a 3rd shift to the Belvidere, Ill. plant to bulk up its small car line, further fueling the rumors that say the Patriot and Compass are for real. A second shift has already been added for production of the Dodge Caliber

The shift addition supports Chrysler's intent to bring 10 new vehicles to the market in 2006.

LaSorda also said that Chrysler may bring another diesel vehicle to the U.S. market thanks to the company's success with the diesel Jeep Liberty. Chrysler sells diesel varieties of its Chrysler 300, Voyager minivan, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chrysler PT Cruiser in Europe.
