Ford's Mark Fields, its new head of North American operations, has stated that up to 50% of Ford's supplied components will come from "low-cost" countries (read: Asia) in the next five years. This follows the current industry trend of pushing cost-reduction efforts down to suppliers, since so much (up to 80%) of a vehicle's content consists of components purchased from outside suppliers. Will customers of domestic vehicles care that their vehicle was built of foreign components? Will they even take notice?
