Mitsubishi Motors is looking to sell more of its manufacturing capacity. With sales in its home market and the US doing poorly, Mitsubishi uses its excess manufacturing capacity to produce vehicles for other manufacturers. Outside of what Mitsubishi has done for Chrysler, they also produce cars for Nissan and will be working with Peugeot soon. They are looking to increase their contract manufacturing business to increase the utilization of their plants and also to help their bottom line.
With the relatively positive press the new Eclipse is receiving, perhaps their future will begin looking brighter. Mitsubishi is at a critical point. If they cannot get it together on their own, they either need to back down and become a contract manufacturer and technology provider for other companies, or they need to be brought under a larger manufacturer who will be able to inject capital and resources to turn the brand around.
