VW's diesel sales skyrocketing

Although June represented a slight decrease in overall sales numbers compared to the same month last year, VW's diesel sales were up over 46 percent for the period. VW's turbocharged diesel powerplant, called the TDI, gets about 30 percent better fuel economy than a comparable gasoline engine. This summer marked VW's U.S. debut of the Passat TDI, the most fuel-efficient midsize family car sold here, with a rating of 38 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg in the city.
