2015 Volkswagen Golf TSI

Contrary to what you may have assumed, the Volkswagen Golf was not named after the sport. Rather, when the car was being developed as the successor to the Beetle, "Golf," which is German for "Gulf," was meant to pay homage to the Gulf Stream, a powerful and swift Atlantic Ocean current. Volkswagen did eventually start to play on the shared nomenclature of the car's name and the sport when the product hit the global market (note the dimpled shift knob). But, this little anecdote exemplifies something that has always been true about the small hatchback: There's more to it than meets the... Read More

    1400014680

The Volkswagen Golf is one of Europe's preeminent vehicles. It's regularly one of the top sellers, and the latest, seventh generation appears to be one of the best ever. It was even named the 2013 World Car of the Year. So how do you sell a car that everyone knows about with over 30 million built? Well, humor, of course. In a new video VW has teamed up ...

Official: Volkswagen's Golf SportWagen has a new name, same utility
    1400009580

Hey, remember the New York Auto Show from a few weeks back? Well, Volkswagen showed off a car that it called a concept, but that was basically a production-ready vehicle. It was called the Golf TDI SportWagen Concept, and we didn't need to exercise our powers of deduction to figure out what car this thinly veiled concept was foreshadowing. This is the ...

Report: VW Golf R 400 could produce even more than 400 horsepower
    1399898700

When Volkswagen revealed the Golf R 400 concept at the Beijing Motor Show last month, it emerged as the most extreme version of the hatchback we once called Rabbit since the bonkers GTI W12-650 concept of 2007. The main difference is that while that 641-horsepower, mid-engined, twelve-cylinder scalding hot hatch was never destined for production, the Golf ...

    1398119460

The Golf R 400 Concept with 395 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque might be one of the coolest concepts at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. The absolutely scorching hatch can hit 62 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 174 miles per hour. All of that power comes out the EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that is nearly ubiquitous in ...

Beijing: Volkswagen Golf R 400 Concept is your new favorite hot hatch [UPDATE]
    1398007380

UPDATE: A previous version of this story listed the Golf R 400 Concept's top speed as 201 miles per hour. This is incorrect. The correct top speed is 174 mph and the story has been edited to reflect that. This, friends, is what happens when you shoehorn 395 horsepower into a Golf. You get a three-door hatch that will happily scurry to 62 miles per hour ...

Official: Volkswagen Golf R 400 Concept is an even hotter hatch
    1397908800

Several years ago, Volkswagen showed up at the annual Wörthersee expo with what could only be described as a concept worthy of pants-wetting excitement – at least, for hot hatch enthusiasts like me. What VW had done was shoehorn its twin-turbocarged, 6.0-liter W12 engine behind a Golf GTI's front seats, creating the GTI W12 650 – a car ...

There is some bad news for hot hatch fans who also love efficiency. The chances of the Volkswagen Golf GTD coming to the US are increasingly slim, according to an interview with Volkswagen Group of America CEO Michael Horn in Automotive News. Horn says that the model would cost too much to import from Germany. Cue the sad trombone. "The GTD would be a ...

Geneva: Volkswagen Golf GTE is mean, green eco machine
    1394011800

I have this theory that keeps coming up when recommending new cars to people: "Just buy a GTI." Seriously.
