As expected, Volkswagen has taken the hyper efficient diesel-hybrid powertrain from its XL1 tandem two-seater and installed it in the Up! city car. The new Franken-hybrid is called the Twin Up! concept, and has debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show today. With the XL1's two-cylinder, 800cc diesel engine and 35kW electric motor, the tiny four-seat hatchback can ...
After introducing the CrossBlue plug-in hybrid SUV concept at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, Volkswagen showed off the CrossBlue Coupe concept in Shanghai in April. We're about to get our third CrossBlue sighting at the LA Auto Show next week with an updated, seemingly more production-friendly version of the CrossBlue Coupe. Originally, the ...
Volkswagen has released all of the official details of the 2015 VW e-Golf ahead of its debut next week at the LA Auto Show. The zero-emission version of the next-gen Golf, which we saw for the first time at Frankfurt, will go on sale in the US during the fourth quarter of next year. In place of the new Golf's gas and diesel engines, the 2015 e-Golf gets ...
If the development of the Bugatti Veyron represented the greatest gift the Volkswagen Group could have given from its deep R&D pockets to performance enthusiasts, surely the XL1 does the same for tree-huggers. It represents no less significant an investment on VW's part, and no less significant and advancement in terms of environmental credentials. ...
We've received multiple reports that Volkswagen will be bringing a diesel-electric concept to the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, set to take place later this month. The car, called the Twin-Up!, is based on the Up! city car, with some sources claiming this is a thinly veiled concept that will eventually enter production. According to Automotive News Europe, the ...
If it had a bit more ground clearance and we didn't know any better, we'd ask when Forge Motorsports' first-generation Volkswagen Golf racecar competed in Group B rally, thanks to almost every one of its exterior design/aero elements and the crazy 400-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four (crank up the boost from 1.0 bar to 1.8 bar and the engine will ...
Volkswagen brought just three vehicles to SEMA this year (compare that to Ford's 57 show cars): two Jettas and a Golf. Both Jettas showcase the automaker's new turbocharged EA888 four-cylinder engines - one of which is heavily modified - and the Golf is the first seventh-generation model tuned in North America (it launches here next year). The Golf ...
While you're bound to see more American and Asian cars at SEMA than you will European ones, Volkswagen stands as a notable exception. This year VW is showcasing its new EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder engines with a pair of customized Jettas. First up is the Racers Dream in Black and White, a Jetta sedan fitted with the new 2.0-liter turbo four and ...
The VW Golf R has always been a GTI on steroids. But even with a bigger dose of performance-enhancing power than the GTI, every generation of R has left us wanting more. Until now, we think. The fourth generation Golf R, based on the seventh-gen Golf, has officially debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and under its hood is an increase in power that ...
Large delivery vans might make sense in American cities with broader boulevards and ample parking day or night, but crowded European city streets demand something a little smaller. And so Volkswagen has unveiled the e-Load Up! Based on the existing Up! five-door, the e-Load Up! stands out not only for its panel-van cargo conversion, but also for its ...
VW is using the Frankfurt Motor Show to trot out a concept version of the next Golf Plus. Dropping the 'Plus' with this next iteration, the compact mini-minvan will henceforth be known as the Golf Sportsvan, and this concept is about as close to production as concepts get. With a length that slots neatly between that of the shorter Golf hatchback and ...
Volkswagen has never been one to put all its eggs in one basket, be it brands, models, bodystyles or powertrain technologies. Germany's largest automaker is a major player in both gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, but it has also dabbled in hybrid powertrains more recently, and it's cranking up its pure-electric campaign as we speak. A key ...
Volkswagen unveiled two new electric models today, the e-Up! and e-Golf powered by lithium ion batteries and electric motors giving them ranges of 118 miles and 99 miles, respectively. The pair of VWs were designed in-house by the automaker, and critical components, including the motors, gearboxes and batteries, will be built in Germany at VW's Kassel ...
Just ahead of this week's Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen has announced the world premiere of its Golf Sportsvan, a near-production concept that succeeds its Golf Plus. VW describes this compact family car as "one of the most versatile vehicles of the compact class," noting that it offers a mix of hatchback and minivan features in a sporty package. That ...
Volkswagen has seen fit to release an additional 21 images of the 296-horsepower, all-wheel-drive 2014 Golf R. Our crack team covered the monstrous little hatchback ahead of its debut at next week's Frankfurt Motor Show, but know that a brand new gallery of the thing couldn't hurt, either. As a recap, power comes from a massaged 2.0-liter, turbocharged ...
Volkswagen has been making R-badged Golfs for longer than you might think. In fact, what you're looking at here is the fourth such model. But while previous generations have moved the power game incrementally forward, this latest version moves it on by leaps and bounds. Set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, now just weeks away, the new Golf R packs a ...
Volkswagen showed six conceptual takes on its Up at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, one of those being the Up Buggy. Although few will probably remember it, VW has not forgotten it, applying for a patent for the Meyers Manx revival roadster way back in March 2012 and being approved in June of this year, according to a report in Autocar. That will give the ...
Volkswagen has announced another vehicle that will be delighting the brand's fans at this week's Wörthersee festival in Austria. The Amarok R-Style is a performance version of the pickup that VW seemingly sells all over the world... except the US and Canada, of course. The truck is powered by a 3.0-liter TDI V6 making 272 horsepower and a stout 442 ...
As is the case every year, Volkswagen engineers have built and brought a new toy to their fans at the annual Wörthersee festival in Reifnitz, Austria. Called the Design Vision GTI, this track toy is a Golf that's been widened, lowered and given an injection of twin-turbo V6 steroids. The powerplant providing motivation is a 3.0-liter V6 paired with ...
Following the announcement that Audi will be using the Wörthersee Tour to unveil a lightweight version of the TT called the TT Ultra Quattro Concept, we're now hearing that Volkswagen also has plans to show off a special concept vehicle at the annual brand-centric performance festival.
