Review: 2010 Toyota Prius a miser with new moves

When car buyers think of hybrids, the name that most often springs to mind is the Toyota Prius since it was the first really practical hybrid to come to market and has sold more than any other examples. Yes, of course, the original Honda Insight beat the Prius to market in the U.S. by about six months, but the tiny two-seater sold in equally tiny numbers and had limited appeal beyond hard core hyper milers. In the coming weeks, Toyota dealers will start getting their first allotments of the all-new third-generation Prius, and while we got to spend a few hours with one on the west coast i... Read More

Toyota wants to sell 5k-10k fuel cell vehicles a year, to start
    1386855900

Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) powered by hydrogen were taken more seriously at the LA Auto Show and Tokyo Motor Show last month than ever before, but their presence in the market is still shrouded in fog. Soichiro Okudaira, chief officer of research and development at Toyota, is confident fuel cell costs will come down enough to make FCEVs "just one ...

Toyota's production fuel cell vehicle to wear Prius badge? [w/poll]
    1385856060

Like the very slow drip of water coming from the tailpipe of a hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle, information about the first production fuel-cell model from Toyota – slated for 2015 – is coming rather deliberately. The latest is that Toyota might use the Prius badge for the fuel-cell sedan, Auto Guide says, citing comments made by Bill Fay, ...

Why Toyota constantly improving the Prius' fuel economy is something of a fool's errand
    1384799400

Toyota has a great marketing line when it comes to the power of hybrids: "Toyota estimates its hybrids have saved their owners more than 3 billion gallons of gasoline worldwide compared to gasoline-only powered vehicles." We're not going to quibble with that number – it is impressive – but it did raise some questions. After all, if Toyota is ...

Report: New Honda Fit ousts Toyota Prius as Japan's top-selling car last month
    1384214400

The Toyota Camry may lose its title as the best-selling car in the US next year and the Honda Civic has already managed to outsell the Toyota Corolla to become the top-selling compact in the US, but it looks like the domination woes have just hit Toyota on its own turf. Bloomberg reports that the all-new Honda Fit carries the distinction of being the ...

    1383684840

Anyone hoping September's flatlining of US green-car sales was an aberration will be disappointed. October's numbers are in and they're not much better. With gas prices working their way down from their summertime highs, Americans continued to show tempered enthusiasm for hybrids, plug-ins and diesels, as October green-car sales rose just 4.3 percent from ...

2014 Toyota Prius liftback keeps even keel on price, sales
    1382558100

The Toyota Prius is the 800-pound gorilla of the hybrid world, and it looks like Toyota wants to keep it that way by holding the line on prices for the world's most popular hybrid. The Japanese automaker is leaving the price of all five trim lines of its standard hatchback Prius unchanged for the 2014, meaning that the price will once again range from ...

US Prius Plug-In Hybrid gets price cut, won't get JDM two-tone paint
    1381348920

Compared to last year's model, there's not much that's new in the 2014 Toyota Prius Plug-In hybrid –except the price tag. The nominally updated PHEV will lose $2,010 off of its base price while keeping all of the tech and options from the 2013 model. The new base model will therefore start at $29,990, while the Prius Plug-in Advanced model gets an ...

Report: Toyota must go to trial over unintended acceleration suits
    1381251540

Toyota is surely readying its trial lawyers, as the Japanese giant is officially headed to court in a pair of cases relating to its unintended acceleration fiascos of 2009 and 2010. In the first case, the United States Supreme Court has actually got involved in matters, ignoring an appeal from Toyota that attempted to use an arbitrator to settle its ...

September 2013: Prius Sales Drop Proves To Be Bellwether Edition

Could the loss of Labor Day make that big of a difference in green-car sales? That's what some folks will likely be asking now that we know that September sales of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery-electric vehicles and diesels came in below 2012 figures. The drop off between September 2012 and 2013 was worst year-over-year sales performance of the ...

After plateauing earlier this year, US green car sales are settling into a steady pattern of chalking up year-over-year increases in the 30 percent to 50 percent range. Last month, Toyota and Ford both sold their hybrids to a broader range of customers. Plug-in vehicle sales also received a boost after the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in, Nissan ...

Future Toyota Prius Plug In will have wireless charging, more EV miles

Given the vehicle's importance as a halo car for Toyota, news of the next-gen Prius getting a potential 55 miles per gallon was our first headline from the recent Toyota Hybrid World Tour media event, but there is some news to report on the Prius Plug In as well. Namely, that the "plug" part of its name might be kind of superfluous as the car gets a ...

Now that the NSX is on its way back, the list of sports car revivals most yearned for by US enthusiasts is probably down to the Mazda RX-7, Nissan 240SX, Lotus Elise and Toyota Supra. There's been a lot of talk about that last one over the past year especially, with rumors of an all-wheel-drive coupe utilizing a CVT last May, a Toyota engineer declaring ...

Next-gen Toyota Prius aiming for 55 mpg, could arrive in 2015
    1377719940

Twenty years ago, a small group of engineers at Toyota were tasked with the G21 project, a look into the "Global 21st Century" and how Toyota could make vehicles that used less fuel and emit less CO2. You might be able to guess that the result of that project was the Prius, which became an icon and is today the world's most popular hybrid (in Japan and ...

Official: Toyota sells six of every 10 hybrids in California [UPDATE]

Toyota Prius owners aren't bad folks. With a few exceptions, they're just normal people who appreciate the comfortable, high-mileage hybrid. Someone in Arlington, Virginia doesn't see it that way, though, as 14 examples (and one Smart) had at least one tire slashed last Sunday night. The serial tire-slasher didn't swipe any items from the vehicles, but ...
